How To Choose A Scanner

"There are many different types of scanners and just as with any tool, what you want it for will dictate your choice when purchasing one. The flatbed scanner is ideal for scanning single documents or photographs, though the page of a magazine can be scanned if it's a thin magazine. Flatbed scanners are often suitable for both home and small business.

All scanners must connect to your PC and there are two types of connection. The SCSI or Firewire is excellent for scanning large amounts of text at a time, though it is the most expensive option. Most 'ordinary' scanners will connect through USB. Just make sure your PC has the right ports before you buy the scanner.

A slide scanner is used to scan transparencies or slides, so unless you intend doing this, it is not the one for you. The drum-scanner gives the best resolution, but it is very expensive and used only by professionals in print shops. So when you front up to purchase that scanner, make sure you can answer at least some of the salesman's questions such as what you want to do with it and what kind of PC you own; configuration of the PC you'll be using, your operating system, types of documents you'll be scanning and how many per week. The salesman will then be able to advise you adequately on what you should purchase."
